Designing a Chicken Coop
Chicken Hutch Plans

There are many different types of chicken coops out there since there are so many chicken coop plans available. Knowing what kind of chicken coops are out there can really help you come up with what kind of chicken coop you want. In this article we are going to be talking about some of the most popular types of types of chicken hutch plans.
Chicken coops vary tremendously. They can be separated into the categories of small medium and big, or into the categories of portable and stationary. Some coops are just a box with a fence around it where others can be be the size of your bedroom.
Small Chicken Hutch Plans
A small chicken coop is really small. At maximum it can hold up to 3 chickens. If you plan to only have 3 chickens then this is the coop for you. It is for obvious reasons incredibly quick and easy to make and there designer counterpart costs 500$. It is often a portable frame as it is pretty light so you can just pick it up a set it down somewhere else and put the fence around it.
Medium Chicken Hutch Plans
Medium sized coops usually hold around 8 or 12 chickens (so lets say 10 just to be safe). This means it has to be roughly 5 times bigger, but more then just bigger it has to be different in many other ways. Though its not necessary it’s generally advised that if you build a medium chicken coop that you build it so that its either 1 or 2 feet off the ground. These designs generally have the floor of the coop be a screen so that there waste and manure will just drop right down onto the ground underneath. Generally the coop should a be good size, not big enough for you to walk comfortably in. So usually when somebody goes for one of these kinds of chicken coop designs, they have a latch that opens up into the nesting boxes that you install inside of the chicken coop.
Large Chicken Coop
Then there are the large chicken hutch plans and designs. Pretty much all large coops are stationary for obvious reasons. A large chicken coop usually holds around 20 or 25 chickens however depending on how big you make it you could put in a hundred chickens if you wanted. They are generally made so that you can easily walk in to clean it because if its a large coop then I don’t really see how you could put it on stilts. Buts its pretty easy to clean just take a broom, shoo out all the chickens and get to work. Just a quick tip you want to angle the floor so it goes down hill to the door making it easier to sweep outside. A large chicken coop is usually called a hen house. A large chicken house looks a lot like a shed in fact you can actually use the designs of a shed with only a few adjustments such as installing nesting boxes.
Two popular chicken coop designs are called the chicken ark and the poultry shed. Both are very popular, cheap and easy to make. A chicken ark is three dimensional triangle with one side being the actual coop and the other side being open to the outside (the miniature run) but still being protected by wire. Then there is the poultry shed. Which is just what it sounds like its very similar to a shed but for poultry (chickens are a kind of poultry).
